Charles J. Gallard was born in Southborough in 1850. He was a Tunbridge Wells businessman and Chairman of Southborough Council. He died in 1906 and at his bequest The C.J. Gallard Almshouses Charitable Trust was set up. The Trust built 20 flats for the purpose of housing elderly and needy persons from the Southborough area. Construction of the flats commenced in 1911 and they were first occupied by beneficiary residents on 23 October 1912. Work commenced in 2011 to make full use of the ground and extra houses are being built in the gaps between the buildings and on part of the garden area to create six more flats and to enlarge and modernise a number of the originals.
