All that remains today of the ancient Great Bounds Estate is the Lodge House. The manor, which dated from the 14th century, had to be demolished in 1958. In 1663 an ailing Queen Catherine stayed at the manor for 13 weeks, whilst taking the waters of the chalybeate spring in Tunbridge Wells. The manor earned notoriety in that two owners, Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, and the successor to his estate, Sir Thomas More, were both executed for treason in the 16th century.
