Mabledon was built in 1805, mainly of Tunbridge Wells sandstone, by renowned builder and developer James Burton. He sold the house in 1828 to John Deacon, of Deacon's Bank in London. In 1829 Burton's tenth son Decimus, the celebrated architect, was commissioned by the new owner to design a new wing to his former home and over time a further wing and other buildings have been added.
